Privacy Shield

Know who gets your phone number before you hit submit.

Privacy Shield reads a website's privacy policy the moment a form asks for your number, and warns you if the site may sell it or pass it to companies that will call you.

Add to Chrome — it's free Free to use. No account needed.

What the colours mean

Each rating answers one question: if you give this site your number, will other companies end up contacting you? Every warning shows the sentence from the site's own policy that it's based on.

Red

The site may sell your details, or share them with partners who will call, text or email you with offers. This is how one quote request turns into weeks of sales calls.

"We may disclose your personal information to Network Partners to provide you with information about financial products and services that may interest you."A loan comparison site
Orange

The site doesn't hand your number to other companies, but it uses your details to send you their offers, like rewards partners or related brands.

"We may also enable our business partners to let you know about their products and services."A big bank
Yellow

No sign of other companies contacting you, but the site itself says it may call or text you for marketing, or its policy is too vague to tell.

"We may share your information with third parties in accordance with applicable law and for business purposes."Vague about who, and why
Green

Your details only go to companies working for the site, like its payment processor or hosting provider. No selling, no third-party marketing.

"We do not rent, buy or sell personal data from or to others."A privacy-first analytics company
Couldn't check

The page has no privacy policy, or the site won't let us read it. Rather than guess, Privacy Shield tells you what to look for yourself.

Search the policy for: sell, partners, third parties, marketing, contact you.

How it works

It stays out of the way until a form asks for your phone number.

  1. Spots the phone field

Email-only sign-ups are ignored. Nothing is sent anywhere unless a page asks for your number.

  2. Reads their policy

AI reads the site's own privacy policy, looking for who your number could end up with.

  3. Shows you the answer

A red warning pops up on the page, with the exact sentence from their policy and a link to read it all.

Privacy Shield never reads or stores what you type into forms. It only sends the site's name and the address of its privacy policy. Read our privacy policy.
