Privacy Shield — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-10-03

Privacy Shield is a browser extension that warns you before you give your phone number to a website that may sell it or pass it to other companies who will contact you. This page explains what the extension does and does not do with your information.

What the extension accesses

What the extension does NOT do

Third parties contacted

Stored on your device

A short-lived, in-memory record of the current tab's rating is kept so the popup can display it, and is cleared when the tab navigates away.

The extension never records which sites you type your phone number into, and never reads or stores the number itself.

Privacy Shield Supporter (paid)

Subscribers receive a licence key, stored in the extension's local storage. The extension sends it with rating requests so the backend knows it may check sites that haven't been rated yet. Uninstalling the extension deletes the key from your device.

Payments are handled by Stripe. The backend stores your licence key together with your Stripe subscription and customer IDs, and checks with Stripe whether the subscription is still active. Card details go only to Stripe and are never seen by Privacy Shield.

Backend cache

On the backend, only the computed rating for each site (green/yellow/orange/red plus the policy sentences supporting it) is cached, keyed by the site's domain; this cache holds no information about who requested it.

"Report an issue" feature

If you click "Report an issue" in the popup, the extension prepares a pre-filled email (page URL, whether a form/privacy link was detected, and the last rating shown) and opens it in your own email client. Nothing is sent automatically — you see the full contents and choose whether to send it, exactly like any other email you write.
